Statement: Hare Scramble
Hare scrambles are off-road motorcycle and quad (four-wheeler) endurance races through woods, fields and streams. Racers' friends and families spread out over courses as spectators and serve as pit crews to refuel riders. Children begin racing as early as age four. In these photographs participants become figures in a landscape temporarily altered by their activity. The pictures are often sequenced to emphasize time and narrative in a similar frame. The videos in Hare Scramble are moments that unfold by chance within a pre-composed frame.
This work is in keeping with my primary subject, the relationship between people and the rural American landscape. In documenting hare scrambles, I hope to reveal observations of power, grace and recovery.
